Wear Your Team's Colours

I have included links to several photos showing people wearing outrageous outfits that make perfect sense when they cheer for their team. I realize that we have seen situations like this before, but an illustration is worth 1000 words, and it might encourage people to wear hosiery [i.e. pantyhose, nylons, tights, etc.]. That being said, these situations are proof positive that people are willing to break societal norms for this unique type of situation, and to create a new norm. We can use these situations to overcome objections.

Read the remainder of the blog entry to see what I mean.

People often believe that hosiery is a feminine. People would claim to never be caught dead doing that. At least that is what they think. Some people go to sporting events dressed as if they were going to a homosexual parade. They would never be caught dead wearing hosiery, and/or going to a gay parade, but somehow, they can be found in similar situations. Hosiery is not feminine. Wearing weird costumes at a sporting event is masculine. That is all there is to it.

People often believe that hosiery costs a lot of money, and that they cannot get good value out of them. All the costumes and jerseys that people wear to games cost a lot of money as well, and we do not hear to many complaints about that.

People often believe that hosiery does not fit. I disagree, but what if it did not fit? For sporting events, people often go with "1 size fits all". Wearing an inappropriate size is not the end of the world. It is only a sporting event, after all. That being said, both male and female ballet dancers manage to buy hosiery that fits. Why does the rest of the world have such a problem with it?

People often believe that hosiery means conformity at the office. I do not necessarily agree, but what if it did mean conformity? There is a certain goodness associated with conformity. The people in the photo send a meaningful message, because they are standing in an orderly way that spells out a word. How meaningful would it be, if the letters were cryptic and disorganized? How meaningful would it be, if they all wore random colours, that were not associated with their team? Somehow, they did not mind conformity, and they did not mind being told where to sit or stand. Uniforms and formal attire can also earn this kind of goodness.

People often believe that hosiery cannot be worn by men, because of what what society believes. At sporting events, people wear what they want, without very much concern about what other people believe. If fact, in some cases, the more unusual, the better.

Ultimately, a lot of people will not wear hosiery during a sporting event. For those who are sitting on the fence, we can overcome objections, by telling them the things that I have written. Just be sure to not pressure them, after you overcome their objections. I would say something like, Well, [insert objection here], but you do not have to wear them. I can see that you seem to be uncomfortable with the idea.. This way, they will think that you accept them, and hopefully do.

I must say, though, that I am still surprised that any of those guys would buy a wig just for a game.
